Singapore Airlines SQ12 SIN - NRT Review

Flight Number: SQ12
Aircraft: B777-300ER
Singapore Changi - Tokyo Narita

Ticket Purchase / Redemption

I paid 156,000 KrisFlyer miles + SGD195.60 for the redemption booking on Singapore Airlines. Little D is now 3 years old which meant he had to get his own seat, and redemption is done at FULL FARE.

This redemption was made in November 2023 (10 months before the actual flight) just after Little A was born. Again, there is currently no way for one to make a redemption booking for an infant online or via the SQ app. One thing did change though, in the past I had to provide my credit card details manually to the customer service officer on the phone to complete the transaction. This time around, they triggered a link to your email and payment can be made online. I love this as now infant seat transactions are eligible for Amex Platinum Charge card's Airline Credit where you get SGD200 credit rebate after you spend SGD600 on SQ in multiple transactions in a calendar year. Little A's ticket cost SGD246.

I specifically chose to fly to Narita and not Haneda because all but one flight to Tokyo has the 2013J Business Seat configuration. Having already tried the 2017J and 2018RJ, I wanted to try something different.

Check In

Check-ins at Singapore Changi for Singapore Airlines are either at Terminal 2 or Terminal 3. In this case, it was at Terminal 3.

Economy check-ins are at Rows 3 & 4, but for Business passengers, you can proceed straight to the less crowded Row 6 (T3).

Lounge

After passing through immigration, turn left and you will soon find the SilverKris Lounge, just one escalator ride up, for business class passengers.

The lounge is huge with 4 large sections. My favorite section would be right at the end, just beside the sleeping pods, where you get views of the SQ planes.

There are about 7-8 round tables along this stretch of sofa, perfect for kids who can watch the planes arrive or leave the gates on the sofa, or have them in baby high chairs directly facing them.

The nursing room is located just beside the showers. The room itself isn't the biggest but is sufficient - Nursing Sofa, Changing Mat, Sink. I have to mention that the SQ cups that are supposed to be for mouthwash are a pretty good toy for the little ones.

Seats

Only 1 flight among all flights to Tokyo has the 2013J configuration.

The seats are in a 1-2-1 configuration, but you would really want to go for rows 11 and 15 bulkhead seats as there is a big difference in your leg spacing. The rest of the rows will have you lying flat at an angle as the footwell is located in the corner and not in front of you. Regardless of which seat you take, the seats are just simply HUGE.

Flight Experience

Bassinet Call Out: The only infant seats are in row 15 and 19K with the bassinet in front of you. When not in used, it is a huge space for you to rest your legs or even sit across your kid.

We took 15A, 15D and 15F. The reasons for taking 15A and not 15K shall be explained later.

Food wise we chose to Book the Cook! This has to be done at least 24 hours before your flight and via "Manage Booking" on the website or SQ app.

We had the Gyu Yakiniku while Little D has the Suzuki Teriyaki. Both options were EXTREMELY GOOD.

After the main course, dessert was served. Since we were traveling during the mid-autumn festival, a special dessert of Jelly Green Tea with Red Bean Mooncake was served alongside the usual serving of fruits.

The flight attendant gave our children headsets and SQ bears to Little D and Little A. Satay was served to Little D, but without the sauce (hence not spicy), and paired with a cup of milk.

As it was almost a 7-hour flight, Little D had to take a nap, and the 2013J seats had to be flipped over to form a fully flat bed. He took probably the longest nap in ages (almost 2.5 hours).

Last but not least, always sit on the left side of the plane when you are flying to Tokyo, and on the right side of the plane when you are flying back to Singapore. The reason is that when you are around 45 minutes to 1 hour away from landing, look out your window and on a clear day, you get to see Mount Fuji!

Summing Up

First time for Little A on SQ and first time for Little D having his own seat. I personally would prefer the 2017J and 2018RJ configuration with the smaller seats as it would be easier for me to reach over to Little D. Meal times are also a bit more challenging as your tray table is directly in between you and the bassinet. However, great lounge, great food, impeccable service as always.
